Wing Chun Chi Sao Is Not Soft

This blog post clarifies one of the biggest mistakes of martial arts scene - mainstream Wing Chun practitioners assume Chi Sao is soft and Wing Chun is soft.

If you watch people doing Chi Sao, you will see them rolling their arms softly and continuously and they claim that this is a training tool to develop sensitivity which is supposed to be helpful for self-defence purpose. However, that's not the case when it comes to actual sparring with non-Wing Chun fighters, because you rarely or almost won't see those mainstream Wing Chun practitioners showing their "high-level of sensitivity". (They get beaten up.)

If Chi Sao can indeed enhance their sensitivity and they can trap arms skilfully, then why isn't it happening when they spar with non-Wing Chun people? The reason is because Chi Sao is done wrongly and it only works on those who are doing Chi Sao wrongly. (Among mainstream Wing Chun practitioners.)

Based on our scientific research, we uncovered the fact that Wing Chun was originally a firm and sharp martial art (think about triangle: is it soft or hard?) Originally, scientifically and realistically Chi Sao should be about 2 persons hitting and blocking with hard arms like Karate, hard Chinese Kung Fu, etc.; the reason why those mainstream Wing Chun guys assume that it's soft is because their arms are distorted by their conditioning method, hence they aren't firm and solid to block and hit. (muscles aren't coordinating correctly)

This is a video of how original Wing Chun Chi Sao ought to look like except that you shouldn't move too much:

https://youtu.be/F2UQWKbmSDE (Another hard martial art as a reference)

Pay attention to what they are doing in that video: they are blocking and hitting. In actual practice of hard martial arts those blocks and strikes ought to be done with power. The techniques (blocks and strikes) are supported by body weight/mass adequately to ward off an attack or deliver a strike. Their bodies are balanced, etc.

But what are those mainstream Wing Chun guys doing?

Unscientific techniques: Arms and body are not coordinating correctly hence there's inadequate support from body weight/mass to block and strike a normal being who doesn't do mainstream Wing Chun. And the body's natural alignment is also out of place.

Mainstream Wing Chun Chi Sao

This is Ding Hao, a mainstream Wing Chun practitioner. While doing Chi Sao with other mainstream Wing Chun practitioners, he could stick or roll; but when he was sparring with non-Wing Chun persons without those problems of biomechanics, he couldn't use his stuff effectively anymore (softness didn't work).

Fights

To make matters worse, they have unscientific exercise like this one that distorts the biomechanics https://youtu.be/bBB3yT2U5v8

This video of ours accurately informs audience that the mainstream Chi Sao can't work on the public and it doesn't do anything helpful https://youtu.be/zwX8PVujbWk

Summary: What's wrong with mainstream Wing Chun Chi Sao?
  • Instructions are corrupt and wrong, techniques are done and taught wrongly
  • Wing Chun Chi Sao isn't soft and it's not about rolling continuously, it should be about striking and blocking with hardness
