"Boards Don't Hit Back" - What Is the Actual Purpose of Hitting a Board?

The is probably the most mindless thing that some fans of Bruce Lee and martial artists are doing - they are using the quote in the wrong context and thoughtlessly.

It's true that boards don't hit back, but why do you think that martial artists are hitting boards and bricks? Do you think that they don't know that those things won't hit back?

The general idea of doing a demonstration like this is to exhibit the striking power of the practitioner; alternatively you may also use it to test how strong is your striking power.

Let us now examine:

If we want to test how powerful is a gun and bullet, how should you test it? Most people would probably shoot at a target, right? Can you denounce the power or functionality of this gun and bullet by saying that the target doesn't hit back?

Now apply that thought to practitioners of Karate and other martial arts that hit boards - they are showing you that if they can break the boards in that manner, then they can also hurt you devastatingly if they hit your body. They are not considering if you are hitting back or moving away - in this context, they are showing you that if they hit you, you will suffer from a bad injury.

Now with this new understanding of how to apply a quote appropriately, don't say boards not hit back thoughtlessly just because Bruce Lee had said it.

Watch 0:15 for that demonstration.
