After testing several things and studying Wing Chun, i’ve come to some conclusions based on my analysis. I’ll give my honest review of it when it comes to self-defense.
- Simultaneous attack and defense - The way many Wing Chun practitioners teach simultaneous attack and defense is flawed in application. You might learn how to deflect a straight punch and counter with a punch of your own but against various punches at different angles? You’ll likely get hit. That’s what happened to me when i sparred with a partner who swung wild punches. I blocked a straight punch and got hit in the ribs by an uppercut.
- Lack of realistic sparring - Many Wing Chun practitioners don’t spar or don’t spar realistically. By that, i mean they don’t simulate an actual street fight for self-defense. They simply spar against each other which leads to bad habits and an unprepared mindset when a real attack occurs.
- Trapping - Wing Chun teaches trapping which is effective when done right. The way many Wing Chun practitioners teach trapping is ineffective. It’s very difficult to effectively trap an opponent’s hands exactly as demonstrated unless you’re very quick. I found the best way to trap is by moving to your opponent’s blindside and only trapping the elbow.
